TAKE ACTION

On the heels of our Opening Night film Deep Rising, the award-winning documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January earlier this year and narrated by actor Jason Momoa, Deep Rising illuminates the scientific, geopolitical, and corporate relationship around extracting minerals from the deep seafloor for myriad uses in today’s high tech society, and specifically in the production of batteries for electric powered vehicles. We’ve been closely monitoring the progress of the International Seabed Authority (ISA)—the body that governs the seabed in international waters— and responsible for finalizing the Mining Code. These rules will dictate where and how countries and companies can mine the deep sea. July 9, 2023, marks the two-year deadline by which the ISA member states must complete the code.

At risk are the incredible marine life and ecosystems that have yet to be discovered in the deepest depths of the ocean and the many unknown dangerous consequences associated with deep-sea mining. Critical to this discussion is the opposition of 15 major countries, including France, Canada, Micronesia, and Switzerland, who have issued statements against deep-sea mining in international waters.

Hakai Magazine: It’s Deadline Day for Deep-Sea Mining

Listen to the Diving in Deep: Mining the Deep Sea webinar, a panel discussion with Dr. Sylvia Earle from June 20, 2023. In this roundtable discussion, moderator Carl Lundin, Advisor to Mission Blue, guided the conversation with Dr. Sylvia Earle, Dr. Sandor Mulsow, Vasser Seydel, and Sian Owen about deep-sea mining in the high seas and what we are risking by exploiting this largely unexplored living system.
