SF Climate Week Special Screening

As a participant of San Francisco Climate Week, taking place on April 21-27, 2024 in San Francisco, the IOFF is delighted to host a free screening of a newly released award-winning film about the dangers proposed developments in areas already known to be susceptible to sea levels rising.

Inundation District David Abel (USA) 79 min

In a time of rising seas and intensifying storms, one of the world’s wealthiest, most-educated cities made a fateful decision to spend billions of dollars erecting a new district along its coast — on landfill, at sea level. Unlike other places imperiled by climate change, this neighborhood of glass towers housing some of the world’s largest companies was built well after scientists began warning of the threats, including many at its renowned universities. The city, which already has more high-tide flooding than any other in the United States, called its new quarter the Innovation District. But with seas rising inexorably, and at an accelerating rate, others are calling the neighborhood by a different name: Inundation District.

International Whale Shark Day - Free Screening & Filmmaker Q&A

International Whale Shark Day was established to raise awareness about the importance of whale sharks to marine ecosystems, and is celebrated every year on August 30th. The main purpose of creating this day is to encourage efforts to raise awareness and conserve this species. Whale sharks can reach up to 12 meters or 40 feet in length and about 21.5 tons in weight.

Whale sharks are some of the gentlest creatures in nature. From their swimming and feeding habits to their beautiful patterns they show their calmness. Whale sharks truly deserve the title, “gentle giants”.

At IOFF we believe in the power of visual storytelling as a means of education for audiences of all ages. To recognize and support International Whale Shark Day, we are hosting a free, special screening of "The Shark with A Thousand Names" through Monday, September 4th, and a film director Q&A on Wednesday, Aug 30th at 12 noon PDT. We invite you to join us and learn more!
